Special report: 2008 Olympic Games

BUDAPEST, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian canoeist Gyorgy Kozmann, partner of Gyorgy Kolonics in two events, finally decided to compete in the Beijing Olympics.

Kolonics, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, died suddenly on Tuesday in Budapest. Kozmann and Kolonics were scheduled to compete in the C2 500-metre and 1,000-metre events.

After the death of Kolonics, Kozmann initially refused to take part in the Olympics, but eventually changed his mind.

He said that he had made the decision together with his coach, friends and Kolonics's friends, even Kolonics had a say in it.

Kozmann will compete only in the 1,000 metre C2, and his new teammate will be Tamas Kiss.

According to reports of Hungarian News Agency MTI, a team of brothers, Mihaly and Matyas Safran, will race in the 500-metre event. They had been named earlier as top substitute if Kolonics/Kozmann were unable to compete.
