JAKARTA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission or KPK on Friday detained a corruption suspect of the tsunami financial aids in West Java in 2006, spokesman of the commission Johan Budi said here.

A tsunami caused by a strong quake destroyed massive infrastructures in coastal areas of the province in July, including hundreds of fishing boats, which made it difficult for sailors to go fishing.

The catastrophe had drawn international solidarity by immediately sending aids for the victims.

David K. Wiranata was charged for embezzling funds allocated for assisting sailors to have new fishing boats, causing the state suffering financial losses of 7.3 billion rupiah (some 802,000 U.S. dollars), Budi said.

"He has been arrested in his house this morning in North Jakarta," he told reporters at his office.

Wiranata was a partner of the country's marine and fishery ministry in supplying fishing boats to help sailors in West Java province whose boats were destroyed during the tsunami, said Budi.

Hundreds of people were killed in the tsunami in 2006.

Indonesia has seriously combated rampant corruption since the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhyoyono who took office in 2004. Scores of high ranking officials have been jailed or undergoing legal process for corruption charges.
