DHAKA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition on Nobel Peace Prize was inaugurated here Thursday, witnessing the achievements made by Bangladesh's Grameen Bank and its founder Mohammad Yunus who co-won the prize in 2006 for their contribution of poverty alleviation.
Titled "From Jobra to Oslo," the exhibition tells the development of micro credit program in Bangladesh since it was established by Yunus in Jobra in Bangladesh's southeastern Chittagong district in 1976.
While inaugurating the exhibition, Bangladeshi caretaker government Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed said when Grameen Bank and its founder Yunus received the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, there was an eruption of joy across the country.
"We all felt great pride and there was a sense of momentous achievement sweeping across the whole nation," he said.
Grameen Bank, which has been doing micro credit project since its inception in 1983, till now has provided more than 7 billion U.S. dollars to 7.5 million poor Bangladeshis out of them 96 percent are women.
A lot of people in Bangladesh have benefited from the micro credit program and got out of poverty. Alongside financing employment generation, Grameen Bank has also demonstrated that the poor people, particularly women, are hard-working and creative and credit-worthy.
Norwegian Nobel Committee Chairman Ole Danbolt who was invited to attend the opening ceremony said the micro credit program has brought hope to the impoverished people of Bangladesh as well as the world.
He hoped Bangladesh will become more peaceful and prosperous.
Yunus said the world discovered the ability of Bangladeshis through the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
Yunus said, "The exhibition is a way to look the achievements we have made in the past."
"If we feel down, distressed, we can come to see the exhibition, we will be alive again," he said.
Organized by Norwegian Nobel Peace Center, Norwegian Embassy in Bangladesh and Grameen Bank, the exhibition has two versions. One is permanently accommodated at the Grameen Bank headquarters in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka and the other will be the touring one for traveling across Bangladesh.
