UNITED NATIONS, July 15 (Xinhua) -- UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari has received a letter of invitation from the government of Myanmar to visit the country in mid-August, a UN spokesperson announced Tuesday.
"This is consistent with the standing invitation extended to Gambari by the Myanmar authorities," Marie Okabe told reporters at the UN Headquarters.
Gambari was initially invited to visit in late May, but that was overtaken by the cyclone that struck earlier, she said.
"Gambari looks forward to returning to Myanmar on behalf of the secretary-general (Ban Ki-moon)," Okabe said. "Discussions are ongoing regarding the precise timing, program and objectives of his visit."
The last visit to Myanmar by the UN special envoy was made in last March.
