China quake death toll remains unchanged by mid Thursday

    BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of China's major earthquake stood at 69,197 for the third day in a row as of Thursday noon, the State Council Information Office said in a statement.

    The number of the injured also stood at 374,176, showing no change since July 2, while the number of missing dropped by two to 18,377 after the 8.0-magnitude quake jolted southwestern Sichuan Province and neighboring regions on May 12.

    As of Thursday noon, 96,445 injured people had been hospitalized and 88,218 have recovered and left hospital. There are still 5,578 people in hospital, the statement said.

    Rescue forces had saved and relocated over 1.48 million people by the end of Wednesday, it said.

    According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, domestic and foreign donations had topped 57 billion yuan in cash and goods by Thursday noon, of which 20.5 billion yuan had been forwarded to the quake-hit areas.

    About 1.58 million tents, 4.87 million quilts, 14.1 million garments, 1.87 million tons of fuel oil and 3.99 million tons of coal had been sent to the quake-hit areas, it said.

    As of Wednesday, relief workers had built 454,300 temporary houses and another 25,100 were being installed, while the materials for 51,400 of such shelters had arrived in the affected areas.

    In the 24 hours ended at mid Thursday, 201 aftershocks at or below magnitude-3.9 and one measured between magnitude-4.0 and 4.9were monitored in the quake zone, according to the China Earthquake Administration.

    A total of 16,801 aftershocks had been detected since May 12.

    Of the 53,295 km of roads damaged during the quake, 52,445 km had been restored as of Thursday noon, according to the statement.
