Betancourt was greeted by French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, in Paris on Friday. Sarkozy had made her release from captivity in the Colombian jungle a foreign policy priority. France sent a plane to take Betancourt's children to be reunited with her in Colombia the previous day.

Betancourt was rescued on Wednesday by the Colombian military from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. She reminded her supporters that hostages still remain in the hands of the FARC in the Colombian jungle and urged Sarkozy not to forget them.

Betancourt will reportedly undergo extensive medical testing at a Paris hospital over the weekend.
