All schools in Myanmar cyclone-hard-hit delta region reopened

    YANGON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- All schools in Myanmar's cyclone-hit areas in Ayeyawaddy delta division have been reopened for the 2008-09 academic year, official newspaper the New Light of Myanmar reported Friday.

    The schools were reopened phase by phase since last month and up to the month-end, all schools in the region became alive again with survived school children, the report said.

    These schools have been upgraded to basic education primary ones under the sponsorship of the state with no self-reliant affiliated primary schools in the division remained, the report also said, adding that textbooks have been supplied in time for the move.

    The Myanmar education authorities is also providing assistance to students who lost their parents in the deadly cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar in early May to enable them to continue pursuing education.

    The government is also establishing orphanages in Pyarpon and Labutta in the division for the health care and education.

    Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, hit five divisions and states -- Ayeyawaddy, Yangon, Bago,Mon and Kayin on last May 2 and 3, of which Ayeyawaddy and Yangon inflicted the heaviest casualties and massive infrastructural damage.

    The storm has killed 84,537 people, leaving 53,836 missing and 19,359 injured according to the latest official death toll.
