Special report: 2008 Olympic Games

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Wednesday told visiting Greek President Karolos Papoulias that China was capable of holding "a unique, high-quality Olympics."

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, expressed condolences to Greece on the losses of life and property there during a recent strong earthquake.

He said during a meeting with Papoulias that China and Greece had enjoyed a long-term friendship that had further developed since the two countries forged a comprehensive, strategic partnership.

China attached importance to the relationship with Greece and would like to enhance cooperation and exchanges between the two states and parliaments, he added.

Papoulias said he had held "important and substantial talks" with Chinese leaders and reached a consensus. He noted Greece hoped to work with China to realize agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries and enhance cooperation and relations.

He voiced his belief that there would be a successful Olympics in Beijing.

Papoulias arrived here on Monday for a five-day state visit to China at the invitation of President Hu Jintao, who held talks with Papoulias on Monday.
