COLOMBO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government said Friday that a female parliamentarian who was reported missing by her husband on Wednesday has reported safe to police.

Anjan Umma, the parliamentarian from the main left party JVP, or the People's Liberation Front, was reported missing by her husband Tuan Dulapandan.

"She left home on Tuesday evening for parliament and has not come back home since then," Dulapandan told police on Wednesday.

However the officer-in-charge of the police station at Mirigama, about 45 km north of Colombo, said on Friday that the lady parliamentarian telephoned the police on Thursday to say that she was safe.

Umma on Wednesday wrote to the secretary general of parliament saying that she had broken ranks with her party and would act in parliament as an Independent.

Her defection is being seen as a continuation of the JVP's internal struggle.

Some 10 parliamentarians out of their total strength of 38 in the 225-member assembly defected to form a separate party, the National Liberation Front in March.
