British NGO promises to clear 29 mined fields in Angola in 2nd half of 2008

    LUANDA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The British nongovernment organization (NGO),The HALO Trust, has said it will help Angola clear 29 fields mined with various explosive devices during the second half of 2008.

    The NGO's Operations Director Antonio Pinto Braza told reporters on Wednesday that the 29 mined fields are located in Kuito, Katabola, Kamacupa, Nharea, Chitembo, Kunhinga, Andulo and Chinguar.

    When analyzing the ongoing mine clearance work in the region, he said The HALO Trust cleared 126,335 square meters and removed 466 different explosive devices during the first quarter of this year.

    The referred explosive devices, according to him, were deactivated and collected in the districts of Kuito, Andulo, Kunhinga, Katabola, Kamacupa and Chitembo.

    He also referred that during the same period, the NGO marked two mined fields in the districts of Kuito and Kunhinga covering 200,000 square meters each. They had also sensitized about 1,900 local residents, including 790 children in the region, on the danger of landmines.

    Last year, Angola, in cooperation with foreign NGOs, cleared landmines in about 20.18 million square meters of land and destroyed 25,782 anti-personnel mines and 2,933 anti-tank ones.
