ROME, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Security is being tightened in the Italian capital for the upcoming visit of U.S. President George W. Bush, who is on a farewell tour of several European countries, Italian News Agency ANSA said Tuesday.

Bush is expected to arrive in Rome late Wednesday afternoon. Security will be beefed up from Tuesday evening at the American embassy, the ambassador's residence, where Bush will stay, and along the routes to be taken by the president's convoy.

No commercial flights will be allowed to over fly Rome while Bush is in the city.

Some 10,000 police officers have been mobilized for the visit, while about 300 municipal police will handle traffic.

Six alternative routes have reportedly been drawn up for each transfer the president is to make.

On Thursday morning, Bush will attend a round-table discussion with Fulbright scholars in Rome, the only non-institutional appointment on his calendar.

He will then arrive at the Quirinale Palace at 12:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT) for a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, who will afterwards host a state luncheon for Bush, ANSA said.

Talks with Premier Silvio Berlusconi are scheduled at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT), to be followed by a press conference. Bush will then be Berlusconi's guest for an official dinner.

Bush arrived in Europe on Monday to attend the annual U.S.-European Union summit, held in Slovenia on Tuesday. After the summit, he began his farewell tour to Berlin. After Rome, Bush will travel to Paris, London and Belfast.
