KUNMING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Six countries along Asia's Mekong River pledged for more fruitful efforts on Friday to realize a win-win regional economic development.
The six countries -- China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand -- officially set up the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Corridors Forum in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.
Thanks to the efforts of these countries over the past decade, as well as the support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), conspicuous achievements had been made in the transport corridor construction within the GMS economic cooperation mechanism, said Chen Deming, China's commerce minister.
These achievements had created favorable conditions for the region's economic development and integration, he said at the first GMS Economic Corridors Forum.
"Currently, an urgent task facing us is to speed up the transformation of the transport, resources and regional advantages into economic advantages for the region's development," Chen said.
Other commerce officials attending the forum said mutual investment and cooperation should be strengthened in such fields as resources development, agriculture, light industry and tourism.
With the support of the Manila-based ADB, the six countries kicked off in 1992 their GMS program. The mechanism involved planning and implementation of sub-regional projects in the fields of transport, energy, telecom, tourism, environment, agriculture and trade facilitation.
