Special Report: Fight against Global Warming

CANBERRA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Green Party on Thursday criticized the World Environment Day initiative announced by the government earlier in the day.

Earlier, Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced a voluntary energy efficiency labeling scheme for TV and the fast-tracking of phasing out incandescent light bulbs in favor of greener options.

But the Greens said the government's promises for the long term on climate change were just talk.

"Having destroyed the solar sector in the budget, Peter Garrett and (Prime Minister) Mr (Kevin) Rudd think it's good enough to tell people that there's a voluntary system for stickers on TVs," Greens Senator Christine Milne told reporters.

"If they were serious about energy efficiency, we would have had a strict minimum performance standard for TVs and we would have had mandatory labeling at the very least," she said.

She said measures announced today could not compare with the larger problem of emissions.

"What I'd like to ask is how a voluntary system of stickers on TV sets is going to compare with the emissions that are going to pour out of cars from liquefied coal?" she said. ¡¡
