KATHMANDU, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Nepal is sure to earn
some three million U.S. dollars by minimizing the carbon emission which is
notorious for environmental pollution, local newspaper The Rising Nepal
reported.
At the time when carbon-trade is of great demand, Nepal will bag the lofty amount by establishing the small
hydro-projects with the capacity of 500 to 750 KW until 2011, which would
finally work as the amount saved while generating 15,000 KW electricity. Various
countries and organizations including the World Bank will provide the money
equivalent with the cost of the carbon to be saved in generating hydropower.
Nepal has already earned some 438 thousand U.S.
dollars by minimizing its emission, using environment-friendly energies.
The WB had provided the amount as per the agreement
reached under the Clear Development Mechanism (CDM) Project, assessing Nepal's
contribution to the emission of green house gas by displacing the non-renewable
energies as firewood and kerosene with biogas to some extent.
The Community Development Carbon Fund (CDCF) provided
the money after curtailing 93,902 proved pollution of 807 biogas plant in the
first project and the next lot is also being paid soon under the second project,
said the Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC).
The trade of carbon in the world at present is done
at some 600 million U.S. dollars and the scientists have conjectured that it
will be 14 billion dollars in 2012 with surprising increment.
Although it is possible to set up 1.9 million biogas
plants in the country, only 195,000 plants have been established so far. So, the
AEPC has drawn the attention of all concerned sectors towards this lucrative
aspect. If the process of setting up such plants is developed and promoted, not
only the firewood and kerosene would be saved but there would be salubrious
environment and maximum trade of carbon.
