Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

BAGHDAD, June 4 (Xinhua) -- A truck bomb targeting the house of a deputy chief police in Baghdad detonated on Wednesday, killing five people and wounding ten others, an Interior Ministry source said.

"A booby-trapped truck went off in the afternoon near the house of Brigadier Nadhem Taieh, a deputy chief police in the interior ministry, in the al-Sha'ab neighborhood in eastern Baghdad," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The powerful blast resulted in the killing of five people and wounding of ten others, along with damaging the house and several nearby houses, the source said.

Violence persists in Baghdad despite a relative lull announced earlier by U.S. and Iraqi officials.
