HANZHONG, Shaanxi, May 26 (Xinhua) -- A 6.4 magnitude aftershock on Sunday
killed at least eight people and injured nearly 1,000 in southwest and northwest
China, according to local government sources.
Four people were confirmed dead and 20 were injured in Hanzhong City, in
the northwestern Shaanxi Province, said Mayor Hu Runze on Monday.
Hu said all the dead were in a paddy field in Xixiang County when the
aftershock occurred.
Officials were still trying to ascertain the details of casualties and
damage caused by the aftershock, the strongest tremor since the 8.0-magnitude
May 12 quake.
Two deaths were reported in Sichuan Province, and one in Chongqing
Municipality.
Longnan City, northwest Gansu Province, reported one death, caused by
falling rocks, and 109 injuries with 15 seriously hurt.
182 aftershocks above magnitude 4
monitored in Sichuan after major quake
BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- As of Monday noon, 182
aftershocks measuring above 4 on the Richter scale had been monitored in
southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to the China Seismological Bureau.
Among them, 28 aftershocks measured above magnitude
5, and five above magnitude 6, said the bureau. Full story
China earthquake death toll rises to
65,080
BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of China's
major earthquake increased by 4,520 to 65,080 as of Monday noon, according to
the Information Office of the State Council.
And 360,058 people were injured and 23,150 others
were missing in the 8.0-magnitude quake that jolted southwestern Sichuan

China preparing to drain swelling

MIANYANG, Sichuan, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are
preparing to dynamite the barrier of a swelling quake lake, which has posed a
new threat after a devastating 8.0-magnitude temblor ravaged southwest China's
Sichuan Province.
Helicopters had airdropped professionals and
materials for the operation by 7:49 a.m. Monday onto the dam of the barrier lake
at Tangjiashan in Beichuan County, which was formed by landslides that blocked a
local river known as Jianhe after the May 12 earthquake. Full story
Donations to China's quake-hit regions
rise to 30.9 bln yuan
BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- As of Friday noon,
donations from home and abroad to China's quake-hit regions had reached 30.9
billion yuan (4.4 billion U.S. dollars), up 1.8 billion yuan from the previous
day, according to the Information Office of the State Council.
So far, 9 billion yuan, in cash and relief materials,
had been forwarded to the earthquake-affected areas, the office said. Full story
