OTTAWA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Canada pledged Friday an additional 12 million Canadian dollars (12 million U.S. dollars) to help relief efforts in Myanmar.
"This additional support will help the United Nations, as well as the Canadian and international organizations that are working tirelessly to reach the people most affected by the devastation of Cyclone Nargis," said Bev Oda, Minister of International Co-operation, in Toronto.
Canada had pledged 2 million Canadian dollars (2 million U.S. dollars) in aid shortly after the cyclone disaster struck Myanmar on May 2-3.
It had also announced it would match private donations made by Canadians to aid groups.
Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which hit over the Bay of Bengal on May 2-3, affected five divisions and states in Myanmar, killing 77,738 people, leaving 55,917 people missing and 19,359 others injured, according to latest official figure.
