BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from
magnitude 8.0 earthquake that jolted southwest China's Sichuan Province had
risen to 32,476 nationwide as of 2 p.m. Sunday, the emergency response office
under the State Council said Sunday evening, correcting a previous figure of
32,477.
The number of injured reached 220,109, it said.
In Sichuan alone, a total of 31,978 people were
killed since Monday's deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake, with 209,905 others
injured.
Statistics from the emergency response office show
that the death toll in Deyang and Mianyang cities of the province hit 10,341 and
11,874 respectively.
The office also gave a breakdown of the death toll in
other areas as 4,156 in Chengdu, 2,586 in Guangyuan, 2,871 in Aba and 23 in
Ya'an.
Outside Sichuan, the death toll was 364 in Gansu
Province, 113 in Shaanxi Province, 16 in Chongqing Municipality, two in Henan
Province, one in Yunnan Province, one in Hubei Province, and one in Hunan
Province.

China deploys 113,080 armed forces for
earthquake rescue
BEIJING, May 18
(Xinhua) -- China's armed forces had dispatched 113,080 soldiers and armed
police to help with rescue operations in earthquake-hit areas as of 8 a.m. on
Sunday.
National Defense Ministry spokesman Hu Changming told
a press briefing that the armed forces had pulled 21,566 people both dead and
alive from the debris, but he gave no other details on this figure, treated
34,051 injured people and transferred 205,370 people to safety. Full story
Foreign rescue teams continue search
for China's "miracle" quake survivors
BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The 60 members
of the Japanese rescue team in southwest China had split in two on Sunday in the
hope of finding earthquake survivors in Beichuan county, one of the area's worst
hit by the May 12 tremor.
A 20-plus group, with three sniffer dogs and life
detection apparatus, were searching for lives in the remaining two-floors of a
seven-story building of the county's planning and construction department. Full story
No disease, public health incidents in
quake zone
BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of
Health on Sunday said no disease outbreaks or emergency public health incidents
had been reported by midnight on Saturday in areas affected by the deadly
earthquake which struck southwest China's Sichuan Province on May 12.
A total of 5,850 medical staff and 550 ambulances
were dispatched by the ministry, and had reached all affected townships in the

China to launch online public memorial
ceremony for quake victims
BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- An online public memorial
ceremony will be held Sunday afternoon for those who died in the devastating May
12 earthquake.
The ceremony, jointly launched by major websites
including www.chinaspirit.net.cn, www.xinhuanet.com and www.sina.com, will be
formally launched at 2:28 p.m. at www.china5000.org.cn. Full story
Six days after quake, China still goes
all-out to search for survivors
CHENGDU, May 18 (Xinhua) -- More people were pulled
out from debris as exhausted rescuers kept searching for survivors six days
after the rare earthquake jolted Sichuan Province, southwest China.
A man was rescued at 9:15 a.m. Sunday from a
collapsed hospital of Beichuan County, 139 hours after the May 12 quake which
has claimed the lives of more than 20,000. Full story
