BRUSSELS, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The Belgian government pledged extra relief fund to earthquake-stricken China on Wednesday, raising the total sum to 650,000 euros.
The Belgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that given the need for assistance for the victims of the devastating earthquake in southwestern China, Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht decided to add 400,000 euros to the initially pledged aid of 250,000 euros.
On Tuesday, De Gucht sent a message of condolence to his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi expressing sympathy with the families of the victims.
An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan County in the Sichuan Province on Monday, killing 15,000 people and injuring even more. The death toll could rise as thousands are still buried in rubble and many are reported missing.
