BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, is to publish a commentary on Wednesday urging the country to mobilize and take prompt action in response to the southwest China earthquake.

Monday's earthquake, the worst in China in three decades had put people's safety and property in great danger, says the commentary.

The disaster had pulled the hearts of both the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, it says.

After the quake, President Hu Jintao urged all-out efforts to save the injured and guarantee public safety in the disaster-hit areas. Premier Wen Jiabao headed for the area immediately and directed the disaster-relief work at the scene. The Political Bureau Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the CPC helda meeting on Monday evening and decided to set up a disaster relief headquarters.

"The China Seismological Bureau, the National Disaster Reduction Commission, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Public Security, the General Logistics Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the provincial government of Sichuan have all offered quick assistance to the disaster-hit area.

"All this showed that the central government has special concerns over the safety of the people and their property," it said, adding that these moves have also showed the determination of both the Party and the government to do their utmost to help with the quake relief work.

The disaster has also caused worries for the people across the country. Within only a few hours, neighboring Yunnan Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region have dispatched seismologists into the area, Red Cross Society of China has allocated quake-relief materials and many other provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions are also ready to assist the disaster-hit areas, the commentary says.

On Internet, thousands of people expressed concern and good wishes for their compatriots in the area, which shows the great spiritual force that unites the Chinese, it says.

The commentary also urges government at all levels and ministries in the central government to take prompt action and make quake-relief the top priority of their work and do their utmost to minimize the losses.

"We have to mobilize the PLA officers and soldiers, armed police and paramilitary forces, as well as medical personnel to go to the quake-hit areas as soon as possible; we have to send food, drinking water, medicine, tents and cold-proof clothes to the area to ensure that people in the disaster-hit area have food, clothes, clean water and temporary shelters," the commentary says.

Efforts should also be made to mobilize more people to repair the infrastructure and restore the transportation, power, water supply and telecommunication, and to ensure that major infrastructure projects including dams, railways and tunnels are safe, the commentary says, adding that efforts should also be made to stabilize the society.

The commentary also urged government officials and Communist Party members to consider people's interests top priority and act as pioneers to protect the lives and property of the people.

"We believe, with the firm leadership of the Party and the State Council, with the strengthened unity of the people in the whole country, the disaster-relief work will be a success," the commentary concludes.
