ATHENS, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Athens-based World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has hailed the efforts made by the Chinese people in holding successful and harmonious Olympic games.

According to a recent statement of the union, the WFTU condemned the attempts to politicize the Beijing Olympics and opposed those actions to impede and jeopardize the Games.

Since ancient times, the Olympic games have been spreading the message of friendship, unity and peace throughout the world. They are not only a competition but a grand gathering of all the people, especially the younger generation, said the statement.

The WFTU appealed to the world's working class to be united and supportive to the Beijing Olympic games. The WFTU has about 65 million members in 80 countries around the world.
