BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major
earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the
Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.
The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight
affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi,
Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m..

Rescue teams thwarted from entering
quake epicenter
CHENGDU, May 13
(Xinhua) -- Teams that have attempted to reach Wenchuan, epicenter of Monday's
powerful earthquake in Sichuan Province, via land, air and water were thwarted.
An official with Sichuan Provincial Headquarters for
Earthquake Control and Relief Efforts cited interrupted transport and telecom to
the epicenter, alongside bad rainy weather as the key factors to hold back

Over 16,000 soldiers join in disaster
relief after Sichuan quake
BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday,
16,760 Chinese soldiers have joined in disaster relief efforts after a major
earthquake jolted southwest China's Sichuan Province Monday afternoon.
China will also send 20 military planes to transport
armed forces and armed police to the quake-hit areas, according to the military

13 (Xinhua) -- At least 57 people died and more than 300 others were seriously
injured at the county seat of Wenchuan, the epicenter of a strong earthquake
that struck southwest China Monday afternoon, a local official said early
Tuesday.
"This is only rough number of casualties at the
county seat. The figure is highly possible to rise as the casualties in the
mountainous area is not available," said Wang Bin, Communist Party secretary of
Wenchuan County, the Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, Sichuan
Province, told Xinhua through satellite phone at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday. full story
Quake closes major highways,
expressways in SW China
BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Monday's major earthquake
closed several major highways and expressways in southwestern Sichuan and
northwestern Shaanxi provinces, according to the Ministry of Transport.
Transport along the expressway linking Sichuan provincial
capital Chengdu and Mianyang city had been halted since 3:30 p.m., the ministry

Chinese disaster relief troops
approaching earthquake epicenter on
foot
BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) --
Relief troops are approaching Wenchuan County on foot, the epicenter of a quake
that jolted southwest China's Sichuan Province Monday afternoon.
The authority has not given a specific number of the
rescuing troops approaching the epicenter, but about 100 officers of the armed
police forces advancing to Wenchuan on foot has been accessed via satellite

Isolated China quake epicenter appeals
for emergency aid
BEIJING, May 13
(Xinhua) -- An official of Wenchuan County, the epicenter of a strong earthquake
that struck southwest China Monday, appealed for emergency aid via a satellite
phone early Tuesday, almost 11 hours after the county was cut off from the
outside world.
"We are in urgent need of tents, food, medicine and
satellite communications equipment through air drop. We also need medical
workers to save the injured people here," said Wang Bin, Communist Party
secretary of Wenchuan County, Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba,

More students found buried after
powerful earthquake
DUJIANGYAN,
Sichuan, May 13 (Xinhua) -- More students have been found buried at a school in
Dujiangyan City, one of the worst-hit cities in Sichuan, as rescue operations
continue.
Officials in the Xiang'e Township middle school in
Dujiangyan, about 100 km from epicenter Wenchuan, said fewer than 100 students
out of 420 students survived after a powerful quake brought down a major

Chinese health ministry sends 10
medical teams to quake-hit
areas
BEIJING, May 12
(Xinhua) -- China's Health Ministry said Monday it had sent 10 emergency medical
teams to quake-hit Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The teams comprised medical and epidemic prevention
experts from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and local
health bureaus of Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangdong and Shandong, a ministry
