Beijing: smoking ban in public places from May 1

Beijing brought into effect new broadened regulations against smoking in more public places on Thursday, amid efforts to create a smoke-free Olympics. People caught smoking in forbidden areas will be fined 10 yuan (1.4 U.S. dollars) while enterprises and institutions that violate the ban will face fines between 1,000 yuan (140 U.S. dollars) and 5,000 yuan (700 U.S. dollars).
