Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Two American soldiers were killed in separate attacks in northwestern Baghdad on Tuesday, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

    A soldier assigned to a Multi-National Division-Baghdad was killed when a roadside bomb hit his vehicle at about 10:15 p.m. (1915 GMT), the military said in a statement.

    Another soldier assigned to the same unit died of injuries sustained from an insurgent's attack with small-arms fire at about08:50 p.m.(1750 GMT), another statement said.

    The names of the deceased soldiers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, both statements said.

    The latest deaths brought the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to more than 4,055 since the outbreak of the Iraq war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
