BANGKOK, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said during his weekly TV talk show that the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), an anti-government civil group, wants the military to stage a new coup.
Speaking during his weekly address, Samak blasted the PAD for holding a seminar at Thammasat University on Friday, saying that they wanted to create chaos which would force the military to launch a coup.
However, the premier said launching another military coup is difficult "because there's no reason for a coup and the country is now at peace."
The PAD, which conducted street protests for months helping topple the elected government of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra by setting the scene for the military to conduct a coupd'etat in September 2006, held a seminar at the university on Friday evening to hear varied views of academics and former constitution drafters on the planned charter amendment, pushed by the People Power Party (PPP) led by Samak.
The PAD criticized that the government's plan that amend the 2007 constitution could be interpreted as its attempt to seek interest for the coalition government.
Hundreds of people joined a pro-government demonstration on Friday near the university, shouting anti-PAD slogans. ¡¡
