    BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Li Congjun, former vice president of this Xinhua News Agency, assumed the post of president of Xinhua here on Friday.

    His predecessor, former president Tian Congming, 65, was earlier elected president of the All-China Journalists Association.

    Li, born in 1949, joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1983, and attained a doctor degree in ancient Chinese literature at the Shangdong University in 1985.

    He had been head of the Publicity Department of CPC Committee of Zhejiang Province, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.

    Li is also a member of the 17th CPC Central Committee.
