HANOI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- About 2 million Vietnamese people currently suffer from diabetes, according to local newspaper Youth on Tuesday.

The infection rate, standing at 4.4 percent in urban areas, is tending to increase in the coming time due to the latest disease detection.

To reduce the rates, Vietnam, with a population of some 87 million, is centering on raising public awareness about the danger of diabetes and ways of preventing it such as using appropriate diet, increasing physical activities and reducing weight consequently, and improving diabetes diagnosis and treatment systems nationwide.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people suffering from diabetes worldwide will surge to 333 million in 2025 from over 194 million in 2003, mainly due to a combination of population aging, unhealthy diets, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.
