Kenya names 39 athletes for Africa championships

    NAIROBI, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's athletics officials have named 39 athletes and 12 officials who will represent the country at the African Senior Championships that will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 30 April to May 4.

    The Athletics Kenya (AK) Secretary-General David Okeyo said the team will be coached by Julius Kirwa, the sprint coach will be Stephen Mwaniki while the middle distance coach will be James Mutisya.

    Zipporah Kering will be the chaperon, the technical delegate will be Dan Muchoki while the walk coach will be Julia Achola.

    The team selection was the climax of the two-day national trials, where the 800 meters men's and 800 meters women's races events produced the fastest times in the country this season.

    David Rudisha, the son of the former great runner Daniel Rudisha, posted 1:44:38 to win the men's 800 followed by Asbel Kiprop with a time of 1:44:99. Jackson Kivuva was third with a time of 1: 45:62. All the three will be representing the country.

    Pamela Jelimo of Police also posted the best time in the 800m women's race this season when she romped home in a time of 2:01:02followed by veteran Charity Wandia in 2:04:58 and Faith Macharia in 2: 45:62. They were all selected to represent Kenya.
