New York, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The dollar rose against the euro and the yen on Friday as better-than-expected Citigroup earnings helped ease investor anxiety on the financial market.

Citigroup, the largest U.S. bank, posted a quarterly loss of 5.1 billion dollars and 14 billion dollars in write-downs.

Since many investors had been bracing for even more dismal results, the report sparked hope the credit crisis may be nearing an end.

Problems in the U.S. financial sector have been triggered by weakness in the housing market and some analysts see further falls to come. But Citigroup's earnings eased those fears and increased risk appetite, making the dollar more attractive.

The euro bought 1.5805 dollars in late New York trading compared with 1.5888 dollars it bought late Thursday. The British pound rose to 1.9940 dollars from 1.9916 dollars.

The dollar rose to 1.0182 Swiss francs from 1.0064 Swiss francs, and rose to 104.17 Japanese yen from 103.09 Japanese yen. It fell to 1.0058 Canadian dollars from 1.0127 Canadian dollars.
