WASHINGTON, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The new U.S. embassy complex in Iraq has been cleared for occupancy, U.S. media reported Tuesday.
"On April 14, 2008, the Under Secretary for Management signed the Certificate of Occupancy" for the new embassy complex, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey was quoted as saying.
U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker said last week that the new embassy in Iraq was ready for use in late May or early June.
The new embassy will be the largest U.S. diplomatic complex in the world, with much more fortified working space for 1,000 people and living quarters for several hundred on a 104-acre site, media reports said.
Because of construction and security problems, the opening of the new embassy was delayed for several months.
