Guatemala seizes 1.2 tons of cocaine

    MEXICO CITY, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Guatemala's anti-drug agents Sunday seized 1.2 tons of cocaine in the city of San Andre, a border city with Mexico, according to reports reaching here.

    The spokesperson from the Guatemalan Interior Ministry, RicardoGatica, informed that the amount of drugs found have a value of nearly 16 million U.S. dollars. The drug was being transported by 10 people who were traveling in an all-terrain vehicle. The destination of the drug is alleged to be Mexico.

    Apart from the drug seized, the Guatemalan authorities found three AK-47 rifles and seven commandeered vehicles. According to the Anti-anarchical Unit of the National Civil Police of Guatemala(PNC), who seized the drug on Sunday, this is the second seizure of drugs in Guatemala within the last three days.

    Last Friday, the Guatemalan authorities caught a shipment of 302 kg of the same drug in the city of La Casaca. The drug, worth 3.5 million dollars, belongs to the Golfo cartel, one of the most powerful drug cartels operating out of Mexico.
