German women's handball earn berth to Beijing Olympics

    LONDON, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Germany have earned a berth to the Beijing Olympic Games women's handball tournament after winning their opening two matches at a tournament in Leipzig.

    At the four-team qualifications, Germany scraped past Sweden 27-26 before beating Croatia 22-16 on Saturday.

    Top two teams automatically qualify for the Aug. 8-24 Games and the winners from Sunday's match between Sweden and Croatia will join Germany.

    Romania have also qualified from a tournament in Bucharest, while Hungary face Japan on Sunday to decide the other qualifier.

    In a third qualifier in Nimes, France are level on three points with South Korea while Congo have two. Congo play France on Sunday and South Korea play Cote I'voire.

    China, Russia, Norway, Angola, Kazakhstan and Brazil had already qualified for the 12-team tournament at the Games.
