Croatian president announces attendance at Olympic opening in Beijing

    BELGRADE, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Croatian President Stjepan Mesic announced on Friday his attendance at the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer.

    "I look forward to having the pleasure of attending the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing in August, which is an event of global importance and one that will demonstrate the amazing progress your country has achieved," Mesic said in his message to his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

    Mesic congratulated Hu Jintao on his re-election as the President of the People's Republic of China.

    "I am certain that in this office you will continue to work for the benefit of all your citizens and for the overall prosperity of the friendly country of China in peace and stability, and that you will continue to make your contribution to successful cooperation between our two countries," Mesic said in his congratulatory message.

    Hu Jintao, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, was re-elected President of China for a five-year term on March 15, gaining 99.7 percent of votes of members of the National People's Congress.
