BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Over the next five years, more than 30 percent of mobile phone subscribers in China will read books and newspapers through their handsets, a report has predicted.

The China's Cultural Industry 2008 report, released Wednesday by the think tank Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Shanghai Jiaotong University, also said that by then, 90 percent of Chinese newspapers will have digital editions.

The report said digital publication harbored enormous market potential in China. In 2007, the number of the country's internet users through mobile phones reached 45 million, jumping 2.26 times the previous year's total.

Sales from digital content services and advertisements would top 5 billion yuan (710 million U.S. dollars) in five years, The Beijing News Thursday quoted the report as predicting.

Mobile phone users in China have totaled over 555 million as of January this year. In that month alone, 8.48 million new subscribers were recorded, according to official figures.
