Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

BAGHDAD, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A suicide bomber blew himself up at a border point near the Syrian border, killing an interpreter and wounding six other people, including two American soldiers, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The attack occurred on Friday when the suicide bomber wearing explosive vest was trying to cross the Rabiyah border point, some 120 km northwest of Mosul city, a military statement said.

The wounded included two U.S. soldiers, two personnel from the U.S. Department of Army and two customs security personnel, the statement said.

An investigation on the incident is underway, it added.

Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has been a hotbed of insurgency since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
