AMMAN, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Jordanian National Electricity Power Company
(NEPCO) on Monday started supplying the West Bank city of Jericho with its needs
of electricity. According to a statement released by NEPCO, all preparations
have been completed by the contractors to transmit electricity from the
Jordanian grid through the Sweimeh Electricity Power Plant in the Jordan Valley
to Jericho.
The two sides agreed on daytime and nighttime tariffs for the power supply
from NEPCO to Jerusalem Electricity Power Company. Estimating the electricity
capacity that will be supplied to Jericho to hit 20 megawatts, the statement
said the additional power that will reach Jericho will be around 100
gigawatts/hour throughout the year.
Electric power will be sold to Jericho at preferential prices upon a
Palestinian Authority request made during a meeting between Jordan's King
Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last year.
The power supply, which was scheduled to start at the end of December of
last year, was delayed after the move faced resistance from Jordan Valley
landowners who insisted that the power line should not cross their land.
Once Jericho is linked to the Jordanian power grid, it will stop receiving
electricity from Israel, according to NEPCO.
