NEW DELHI, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and four seriously injured in a bus accident in Indian northeast state Assam Sunday, officials said.
A police spokesperson said the accident took place about 40 km east of Assam's main city of Guwahati.
"The bus plunged into a stream some 25 feet after the driver lost control while crossing a concrete bridge on the highway," the Indo-Asian News Service quoted the police official as saying.
"There were 19 people traveling in the bus. Rescue workers managed to extricate 12 bodies," the official said.
Four passengers, including the caretaker of the bus, survived the accident, but with serious injuries.
"Search is on to look for three more passengers who could be buried in the stream," he said.
Divers of Indian paramilitary Border Security Forces (BSF) are engaged in a massive operation to look for bodies. The injured have been shifted to the hospital, the report said. ¡¡
