BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- A cat that escaped from a house on fire and disappeared since then was eventually found in another city some 386 kilometers (240 miles) away, U.S. media reported Tuesday.

Jade Schulte and Joe Ackley, who live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said their cat, Miko, ran away when their home burned down three days after Christmas. After weeks of searching, they gave up hope that they would find their pet.

About two weeks ago, Schulte got a call from Pueblo, Colorado, that her cat was safe.

Schulte said "I was like, 'Great I'll pick her up!' I figured she was here at the shelter but they said we're in Pueblo, Colorado and I said, 'How on earth did she get to Pueblo, Colorado?' and they said 'I don't know, where are you?' I said, 'We're in Albuquerque.'"

Animal services workers in Pueblo said they found the cat in an animal shelter. Her collar was missing, but shelter officials scanned the microchip in her neck and came up with her owner's name.

Donna Straub, director of Pueblo Animal Services, said no one has been able to figure out how Miko was able to travel so far, but she theorized the cat may have taken refuge from the fire in a truck that passed through both towns.

Miko was returned to Schulte Sunday.
