BANGKOK, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's biggest ruling party, the People Power Party (PPP), is ready to mount a rigorous defense for House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat who has been accused of involving in electoral fraud, party legal adviser Yuenyat Jaisamut said Friday.

"As things stand, an investigative panel has just drawn a conclusion about Yongyuth's involvement in electoral fraud but the Election Commission (EC) has yet to review and rule on the issue," he said, voicing optimism that the five-member EC might not reach a majority decision to endorse the report.

"In order to proceed to the trial stage, four out of five EC members must approve the indictments and he believed every EC member would form the decision without any biases," Yuenyat was quoted by local news network The Nation as saying.

If and when the litigation reaches the Supreme Court, the party will step in to assist Yongyuth in rebutting the charges by exposing the frame-up attempts, he said.

Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon, five members of the EC held an emergency meeting on Yongyuth case and decided to conclude next week.

Yongyuth, member of the PPP, was elected as the House Speaker last month. However, the parliament member from northern Chiang Rai Province was charged of involving in several electoral frauds during the general election on Dec. 23 last year.

If Yongyuth was proved guilty, he would be annulled from the post of House Speaker and Lower House Chairman. Moreover, his PPP could be dissolved by the Supreme Court or Constitution Court.
