HANOI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will invest some 81.3 million U.S. dollars to construct its longest undersea electric cable route to supply electricity to its biggest island in the near future, according to local newspaper Young People on Tuesday.

    The cable route, with expected length of over 50 km linking the mainland with Phu Quoc island district, Kien Giang province, is scheduled to become operational by 2010. The island currently uses electricity generated by diesel oil.

    Vietnam has decided to turn Phu Quoc into a major tourist destination with an international airport, a seaport and various entertainment facilities by 2020.

    Under a recent governmental decision, it will gradually have modern infrastructure and services, including national power grids, adventure tours, mountain climbing, relaxation, golf playing, and dog and horse racing.

    In 2020, Phu Quoc will have 18,000 hotel rooms, 60-70 percent of which belong to hotels of between three and five stars, and reap total tourism revenues of some 771 million dollars. In 2020, it is expected to host 2-3 million tourists with foreign ones accounting for 35-40 percent.
