MANILA, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine police authority on Tuesday said
the country's security personnel is prepared for any "eventuality" that may rise
from a planned opposition rally in downtown Manila this Friday.
Director Geary Barias, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office,
told reporters that all necessary contingency measures will be taken to ensure
the rally "be peaceful and orderly".
The planned demonstrations are set to be held in the oppositions bailiwick
in Makati City. "Our forces in Makati are prepared all the time for whatever
contingencies. We will be monitoring what is going to happen, and the size of
the troops to secure the activity will depend on that," the police official
said.
The rally was planned when the Philippine Senate was in the middle of an
explosive hearing at which a former government consultant testified of
government officials and certain family members of ranking officials allegedly
getting kickbacks and commissions in a controversial government broadband deal.
The government has repeatedly denied the allegations.
Military spokesman Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro said the military are not
foreseeing large-scale demonstrations brought about by the planned
rally.
