ISLAMABAD, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Election
Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday unveiled the details of polling stations
for Feb. 18 polls.
The ECP has put all the details of the polling
stations across the country on its official website.
The Secretary of ECP Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad was
quoted by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) as saying that the ECP staff
had to make extensive effort to post all details to the website for transparency
of the polls.
Dilshad said, "this practice of the commission is yet
another step towards transparent polls."
The ECP has set up around 64,000 polling stations
across the country for the conduct of general elections for National as well as
Provincial assemblies.
Some of the political parties raised the
apprehensions of setting up "Ghost Polling Stations" for casting bogus votes.
"We have addressed these apprehensions and now it is crystal clear that there
are no "Ghost Polling Stations," Dilshad said.
He said an extensive public awareness campaign has
been launched by the Election Commission to inform electors about the importance
of vote and how to exercise it, their right and responsibilities and the
importance of general elections, through an Education program on the print and
electronic media.
Special arrangements have been made for international
observers, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, to enable them to observe the proceedings of the upcoming
general elections, he said.
The Presiding Officers, he said, have been given
powers of first class Magistrate for maintenance of order at polling stations.
They can remove or cause to be removed any person who misconduct at a polling
station or fails to obey any lawful order of the Presiding Officer.
The general elections are slated to be held on Feb.
18.
