LIMA, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Spanish tennis player Nicolas Almagro defeated
Peruvian rival Ivan Miranda in straight sets on Sunday tobring the two nations'
Davis Cup World Group series to 5-0.
Almagro tackled the end of the competition with greater seriousness and was
determined that the Spanish team would return loss-free. Miranda already looked
physically worn out and had few technical resources to withstand attacks.
Almagro, who is ranked 31st in the world by the Association of Tennis
Professionals (ATP), displayed a powerful serve and shots that targeted the
depths of the line which wore down his rival physically. The first set ended
6-2.
In the second set, Almagro relied on his strong backhand to demolish
Miranda. The set ended 6-3. The whole match lasted only one hour and four
minutes.
Earlier on the day, Spain's Tommy Rebredo won his nation's fourth point by
defeating juvenile Peruvian player Mauricio Echazu.
Robredo suffered a few first-set upsets against lively 19-year-old Echazu,
who is rated 1,128th, who put him under pressure in the depths and showed that
he has a lot of condition.
The two players have a similar style, pushing deep into the court and with
strong right hands. Their first set went tit-for-tat until 3-3, when Roberdo,
rated 19th, decided to step up the pressure. The set ended 6-4.
The second set was a much more comfortable affair for Spain's number two
player, who polished up his serve and pushed Echazu over the line. It ended 6-1.
Spain had already won three other matches. On Saturday's double's match
Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco beat Peru's Luis Horna and Ivan Miranda.
On Friday, Robredo and Nicolas Almagro defeated Peru's Ivan Miranda and Matias
Silva respectively.
Spain did not drop one set against Peru, during the whole competition. It
was Peru's first appearance among the elite 16-team World Group. Spain will play
Germany in the quarterfinals in April.
