LONDON, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- British Foreign Secretary David Miliband on Sunday called on the Afghan government and fellow NATO countries to do more to support British troops in Helmand province.

In writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the foreign secretary warned that more must be done to purge police corruption and provide political support for the battle against the Taliban.

He also called on EU countries to match British investment in Afghanistan and asked for other NATO nations to send more troops.

"Britain has decided to maintain its commitment of 7,700 troops, but the sizeable Canadian commitment will be maintained only with greater commitment from elsewhere -- and in the next few months, that needs to be secured," he said.

"The Afghan government needs to crack down on police corruption, not just to build the country but also to build confidence among the people," he said, "The Afghan government must build the capacity of local as well as national institutions."
