ISLAMABAD, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Friday summoned a British diplomat to the Foreign Ministry to lodge protest over the maltreatment of a political leader and members of his family at the Gatwick Airport in London, the Foreign Ministry said.

    "The British Acting High Commissioner was called to the Foreign Office and conveyed serious concern and consternation of the Government of Pakistan over the treatment meted out to Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain and others accompanying him at the Gatwick Airport, London," a Foreign ministry statement said.

    Britain's anti-terror police on Tuesday detained Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, former member of the National Assembly and brother of former Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujat Hussain, along with his three nephews and two other people after their arrival inLondon from Spain, local media reported.

    The Acting Foreign Secretary asked the British Envoy to explain the circumstances which led to this incident and ensure that such incidents would not be repeated, the statement said.

    The Acting British High Commissioner conveyed sincere regrets of the British Government and explained that the incident took place because of a misunderstanding, it said.

    "A senior official of the High Commission had visited the family to personally convey their regrets on this incident".

    The British Envoy was also asked to thoroughly investigate the incident and provide a report, the statement said.

    Pakistan High Commission is pursuing the matter with the British authorities in London.
