MEXICO CITY, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Top Mexican drug lord Alfredo Beltran Leyva is being held in a maximum security prison following his capture this week, the Attorney General's Office said Wednesday.
According to a statement released by the office, Beltran was arrested Monday and had been taken into custody by police at maximum security jail Puente Grande, in the western Mexico state of Jalisco.
Federal agents and soldiers arrested Beltran in Culiacan, the capital city of northwestern Mexico state of Sinaloa, the statement said. He was charged with arms and drug trafficking.
Mexican media reported that he was the second-in-command of the organized crime ring, Sinaloa Cartel.
During the same operation, authorities arrested his security guards Javier Hugo Urquiza Inzunza, Flavio Manuel Castro Leon and Jose Uistesingo Barraza.
They also seized an AK-47 assault rifle, eight handguns, 900,000 U.S. dollars, a BMW X3 sport utility vehicle and 11 luxury watches.
