JAKARTA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Doctors have been trying to strengthen Soeharto's muscles as the health condition of the ailing former president had been significantly improved, the Antara news agency reported Sunday.

"Soeharto is still lying on bed and is not fully recovered. Therefore we are trying to make him stronger," Antara quoted a member of his medical team, Dr. Yusuf Misbah, as saying on Sunday.

The doctor said the ailing former president, who is conscious and trying to speak, had been able to move and raise his left arm.

Meanwhile, chief of the medical team Dr. Mardjo Soebiandono said Soeharto would undergo a lot of exercises to improve his physical condition.

He said the doctors would give Soeharto physiotherapy in an effort to strengthen muscles of his arms and legs.

He added that Soeharto's blood pressure had been stable and his respiratory system had also been gradually normal.

Soeharto was rushed to Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta on January 4, 2008 for severe anemia and edema. He had gone through several critical stages during his stay in the hospital.
