Italian PM to temporarily take over justice minister's portfolio 2008-01-17 21:37:58   Print

ROME, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Italian Justice Minister Clemente Mastella Thursday confirmed his intention to resign and that his portfolio will temporarily held by Premier Romano Prodi, the ANSA News Agency reported.

Mastella announced his resignation Wednesday after it was reported that his wife, Sandra Lonardo, was to be placed under house arrest in connection with a political corruption probe in the Campania region.

Prodi initially rejected Mastella's resignation but later in the day it was confirmed that the justice minister was himself under investigation in the same probe involving political favors and pressure exerted to influence public appointments.

Mastella is suspected of conspiring with other people, including his son's father-in-law Carlo Camilleri, to force Campania Region President Antonio Bassolino to appoint a member of his own Udeur party as head of a national health center in Benevento.
