Vietnam, Thailand to host Asian athletics tournament

    HANOI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will host the third round of 2008 Asian Grand Prix, an annual competition organized by the Asian Athletics Association, in June, according to the Vietnam Athletic Federation on Wednesday.

    The third round is scheduled to start on June 30, and the first and second round on June 23 in Thailand. The association will choose most outstanding athletes from Asia's major athletic events for partaking in Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

    Vietnamese woman sprinter Truong Thanh Hang, high jumper Bui Thi Nhung and sprinter Vu Thi Huong are expected to win medals in this year's competition.

    Hang, Vietnam's best athlete of  2007, showed the track-and-field scene at the Asian Championships in Jordan last July when finishing first in the women's 800m event with a time of 2 minutes 4.77 seconds, passing over many experienced rivals from South Korea, Japan and China.

    Last June, Nhung and Huong grabbed bronze medals in the third round of the 2007 Asian Grand Prix in India. The 2007 tournament held in India and Thailand was attended by 170 athletes from 23 countries and regions.
