BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- "Olympic Fine Arts 2008," a cultural event organized by
the International Olympic Committee and Chinese Olympic Committee, kicked off
here Thursday morning.
The organizers will invite well-known artists from over 80 countries and
regions to display their works in the event, whose themes are "Sports and
Olympism" and "China, the World."
In addition, renowned Chinese artists will be invited to produce pieces for
a related exhibition and contest. Works will include Chinese painting, oil
painting, print art, sculptures and digital art. A panel of Chinese and foreign
art experts will evaluate the submitted works.
According to He Zhenliang, chairman of the IOC's Commission for Culture and
Olympic Education, the event will play a major role in presenting Chinese
culture and art as well as the development of Beijing customs.
The organizing committee also unveiled the creative emblem for "Olympic
Fine Arts 2008." The emblem incorporates the beauty of Chinese architecture
(silhouette of the Temple of Heaven) and the beauty of sports (the likeness of a
person running) while representing the charm of Chinese calligraphy art. The use
of multiple colors symbolizes the amalgamation of the world's cultures.
An advanced exhibition period for the Olympic Fine Arts 2008 event will run
from May to July 2008. The official exhibition period will begin in August 2008,
and the exhibition will begin a tour beginning in September.
